If you’ve started looking for wedding invitations, you’ve probably come across the terms custom and semi-custom. But what do they actually mean, and how do you know which experience is right for your wedding?
Both custom and semi-custom wedding invitations give you a beautiful, professionally designed suite printed on luxury paper. The biggest difference isn’t the quality of the finished product; it’s where we begin the design process and how much we can change along the way.

Here’s what you need to know.
What Are Semi-Custom Wedding Invitations?
Think of semi-custom stationery as a beautiful starting point that I’ve professionally designed, with room to make it yours.
You’ll begin by choosing a design from the Jessica Rose Stationery Semi-Custom Collection. Each suite has an established design, layout, and font selection, but you’ll personalize it through carefully curated options including your wording, paper color, ink color, envelope color, envelope liner, and finishing touches.
The result feels personal to your wedding without requiring us to design an entirely new suite from scratch.
Semi-custom is a wonderful fit if you look through the collection and think, this already feels like us.
It also extends beyond the invitation itself. Your selected design can carry through your entire stationery suite, from save the dates to invitations and wedding-day paper, creating a cohesive look throughout your celebration.
What Are Custom Wedding Invitations?
Custom wedding stationery starts somewhere completely different: with you.

Rather than selecting an existing design, we begin with your wedding, your venue, your vision, and the details you want your guests to experience.
That might mean creating custom artwork of your venue, incorporating a meaningful location, designing a monogram or motif specifically for you, exploring unique shapes, or building a color palette and typography combination from the ground up.
The custom process gives us the freedom to pull inspiration from all the details you’ve already chosen for your wedding, including the venue, color palette, florals, and overall aesthetic of your day. Together, we’ll consider ideas for how to translate those details to paper and create a suite that feels like a natural introduction to everything your guests will experience.
Because we aren’t working within an existing design, there is significantly more flexibility. We can explore different layouts, fonts, colors, artwork, materials, shapes, and design elements to create a suite that feels completely unique to your celebration.
This experience is especially well suited for couples who have a specific vision or who want their stationery to tell a more personal story.
Custom vs. Semi-Custom: What’s Actually Different?
The easiest way to think about it is this: Semi-custom begins with one of my designs. Custom begins with your wedding.
With semi-custom stationery, you begin with an established design. You make it yours through your wedding details and a curated selection of colors, papers, envelopes, liners, and finishing touches.

With custom stationery, we have a blank canvas. We can build the design around your venue, wedding weekend, personal story, or a specific creative direction.
Custom also allows us to explore design elements that fall outside the parameters of the semi-custom collection, such as new font selections, multiple colors, specialty shapes, and completely new layouts.
Both experiences still come with professional design guidance throughout the process. You don’t need to know Emily Post’s etiquette or how to make your suite feel cohesive from your save the date to your day-of paper – that’s my job.
Is Semi-Custom Still Luxury Wedding Stationery?
Absolutely.
One of the biggest misconceptions about semi-custom invitations is that they are somehow a lesser version of custom stationery. They aren’t.
The difference is in customization, not quality.
You’re still working directly with a professional stationer. I professionally design every suite in the collection and print your stationery on luxury paper, with the option to incorporate custom artwork for an added personal touch.
You also receive the same thoughtful experience throughout the process, including access to a professional who understands wedding invitation etiquette, professional proofing, printed guest and return addressing, and a keepsake suite to have photographed on your wedding day and save long after it’s over.

Semi-custom can also be an incredible way to prioritize the details that matter most to you. A beautiful envelope liner and a carefully selected color palette can transform the existing design you fell in love with into a suite that feels personal to you and perfectly complements your wedding.
Which Design Experience Is Right for You?
If you love an existing design and want the expertise and quality of working with a professional stationer without beginning from a blank page, semi-custom may be the perfect fit.
If you have a specific vision, want to incorporate interesting shapes or meaningful details, or simply want something designed entirely around your celebration, custom may be the better experience for you.
And if you aren’t sure? That’s completely normal.
You don’t need to know the exact paper, printing method, envelope color, or number of pieces you need before reaching out. Part of working with a stationer is having someone guide you through those decisions and help you determine what makes sense for your wedding.
Whether we begin with a design from the collection or a completely blank canvas, the goal is the same: to create an invitation suite that gives your guests a beautiful first impression of the celebration to come.
